(KPL) On December 21, Authorities in Vientiane Province have officially opened celebrations for the traditional Hmong New Year in Meun District, while Hmong ethnic communities nationwide are also celebrating their New Year during the same period.

The opening ceremony was attended by Mr Phonkeo Khunphon, Deputy Secretary of the Vientiane Provincial Party Committee, Mr Sonexay Luang-aphai, District Party Secretary, along with provincial and district leaders, community elders and local residents, many of whom belong to the Hmong ethnic group.

Cultural and spiritual significance

Speaking at the event, Mr Chithao Songyer, Vice Chairman of the Meun District Administrative Committee, said the Hmong New Year is one of the most important traditional festivals of the Hmong ethnic group and is celebrated annually after the harvest season by Hmong communities across the country.

He said the festival marks the farewell to the old year, symbolising the removal of misfortune and hardship, and the welcoming of the new year by “opening the heart” and family home to good luck, prosperity and new opportunities.

The celebrations include important spiritual rites practised by the Hmong people, such as calling back the khuan or souls of family members, livestock and crops, and paying respect to ancestral spirits in the hope of continued protection, harmony and wellbeing.

Customs and taboos

The Hmong New Year follows a strict traditional calendar that has been passed down through generations. On the final day of the 12th lunar month, families perform a ceremony to receive good fortune for the coming year.

During the first three days of the 1st lunar month, several taboos are strictly observed. Members of the Hmong ethnic group refrain from heavy labour, avoid spending money to prevent wealth from “leaking out”, and do not handle weapons, all of which are believed to help ensure good luck throughout the year.

Festivities and activities

The celebrations feature a wide range of traditional cultural activities that reflect Hmong identity, including flute performances, folk singing and the wearing of traditional costumes.

One of the highlights is the traditional ball-tossing game, Pov Pob, a popular social activity among Hmong youth that provides opportunities to meet and build relationships. A local trade fair has also been organised, showcasing traditional handicrafts and ethnic products.

District leaders and community representatives also exchanged gift baskets as a gesture of respect and unity.

The Hmong New Year celebrations in Meun District are scheduled to continue until 27 January 2025, alongside similar celebrations taking place in Hmong communities nationwide.
