(KPL) The Japan Exhibition marking the conclusion of celebrations for the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Laos officially opened on 12 December, highlighting cultural exchange and the future direction of bilateral ties.

The opening ceremony was held in Vientiane and began with a lively Yosakoi dance performance. Welcoming remarks were delivered by Koizumi Tsutomu, Ambassador of Japan to the Lao PDR, in the presence of senior officials, diplomats and members of the public. Among the guests were Xayluexa Insisiengmay, Ms Souvita Phaseuth, President of the Lao Handicraft Association, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phout Simmalavong, President of the Laos-Japan Friendship Association.

Ambassador Koizumi said the 70th anniversary reflected seven decades of steadily deepening relations, marked by progress in economic cooperation, trade and investment, as well as cultural and people-to-people exchanges. He noted that bilateral relations were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in January 2025, followed by a series of commemorative events held in both countries. He expressed hope that the exhibition would allow residents and visitors to experience Japan’s culture and traditions firsthand.

The opening ceremony also featured performances by renowned Lao artist Aluna, a recipient of the Ambassador’s Commendation Award in 2025, and Japanese accordionist Masahiro Ogawa. A kimono dressing show further drew interest from the audience.

The exhibition showcases Japanese kimono, Lao textiles, Japanese and Lao postage stamps, and photographs documenting more than 60 years of activities by Japan International Cooperation Agency volunteers in Laos. It runs until 17 December, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Additional activities are scheduled on 13 December, including live music, talk shows and kimono demonstrations. A Japanese products fair organised by the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Laos will also take place on 13–14 December, combining food, music and art to further celebrate the long-standing friendship between the two countries.
