(KPL) Minister of Public Works and Transport Leklay Sivilay, accompanied by senior officials of the Vientiane Administration Office, visited the embankment construction project along the Mekong River in Chi Nai Mo area, Hatxayfong district, on August 23.
The construction project is funded by the Economic Development Cooperation Fund of the Republic of Korea government. The EDCF provides concessional loans to developing nations under long-term, low-interest terms to support their economic and industrial development.
The minister was welcomed by Phutthasen Sinthavong, Deputy Director of the Vientiane Public Works and Transport Department.
According to Mr. Sinthavong, the project began in February 2022 and covers the construction of a 9.3-km embankment that functions as both a flood-control dike and a riverside walkway, stretching from Wat Nak village in Sisattanak district to Hat Dok Keo village in Hatxayfong district.
Construction has faced challenges as it takes place in densely populated areas, with limited working hours and difficulties in transporting raw materials to the site.
Nighttime construction is also restricted to avoid disturbing nearby communities. Despite these obstacles, the project has reached 89.3% completion and is expected to be finished by June 2026.
Once completed, the embankment will help protect flood-prone areas from Sikhot district to Hatxayfong district and provide a new recreational space for Vientiane residents and visitors alike.
Mr. Sinthavong urged people to avoid entering the construction area to prevent accidents and traffic congestion.
On this occasion, Minister Leklay Sivilay stressed the importance of completing the project on schedule while minimizing social impacts on local communities.
