(KPL/VNA) In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Vietnamese Revolutionary Press (June 21, 1925 – 2025), Lao officials have shared profound reflections that not only express their deep appreciation for Vietnam’s revolutionary press but also emphasise the essential role of the press in preserving and promoting the special Laos – Vietnam relationship, especially in the face of challenges posed by the digital age.

In an interview with the Vietnam News Agency (VNA)'s resident correspondents in Vientiane, Lao Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongsavanh Phomvihane affirmed that the presence of Vietnamese press offices in Laos vividly demonstrates the great friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between the two nations, as the press is not only a means of communication but also an important bridge for spreading consciousness about the history, values, and strategic depth of the Laos – Vietnam relationship to the people of both countries and the international community.

In the context of the information explosion, especially on social media platforms, where misinformation and distortions can cause division and doubt, the role of the mainstream press has become increasingly vital, Thongsavanh stressed.

He emphasised that the Vietnamese press in Laos is effectively fulfilling its mission of providing accurate and timely information, thereby helping to strengthen mutual trust and understanding between the two countries' people, and affirm the righteousness, transparency, and spirit of cooperation in the bilateral relationship.

From a theoretical and strategic perspective, Khamphanh Pheuyavong, Chairman of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Central Committee's Commission for Propaganda and Training, delved into the historical role and new mission of the revolutionary press in the digital age.

The official affirmed that the Vietnamese Revolutionary Press has accompanied the nation through historic turning points, from the resistance wars for national reunification to the periods of renewal and international integration. Today, the press continues to serve as a pioneering force on the ideological and cultural fronts, confronting unprecedented challenges posed by digital technology, artificial intelligence, and social media.

Khamphanh said that as the world enters the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution marked by rapid advances in digital technology, artificial intelligence (AI), big data, social media, and the Internet of Things (IoT), Vietnam’s revolutionary press continues to face both great opportunities and formidable challenges. He stressed the need for media organisations to enhance their journalists’ capacity to apply new technologies; and align journalistic responsibilities with political guidelines, legal regulations, and professional ethics.

The press must take a proactive role in monitoring and countering misinformation on social media, maintaining its role in guiding public opinion, and clarifying truth from falsehood amid the fast-moving information situation, he noted.
