(KPL) On April 7, 2025, Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh during the national funeral of General Khamtay Siphandone, former President of the Lao PDR, who passed away on April 2, 2025.
Prime Minister Sonexay, on behalf of the Party, State, and multi-ethnic people of Laos—especially the Siphandone family—expressed deep gratitude to Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh for leading a high-level delegation from Vietnam to attend the national funeral. He emphasized that this gesture provided invaluable encouragement and support in a time of national mourning.
He also conveyed appreciation for the Vietnamese delegation led by General Secretary To Lam of the Communist Party of Vietnam, which was the first foreign delegation to lay wreaths and pay tribute on April 3. Additionally, he noted the meaningful visit by President Luong Cuong of Vietnam, who signed the book of condolences at the Lao Embassy in Hanoi.
In a profound display of solidarity, Vietnam observed two days of national mourning alongside Laos—an act that underscored the unique and time-honored friendship between the two nations. Prime Minister Sonexay described the passing of General Khamtay not only as a significant loss for the Siphandone family but also for the Lao nation and its close friends in Vietnam. He reaffirmed his commitment to transforming this shared sorrow into renewed unity and pledged to work closely with Vietnamese leaders to safeguard and deepen the special Laos–Vietnam relationship into a more sustainable and prosperous partnership.
In response, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh extended his heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Vietnamese Party, State, and people. He expressed deep sorrow for the loss of a respected leader and reaffirmed his confidence that the Lao government, people, and the Siphandone family would overcome their grief and continue building a prosperous and resilient nation.
