(KPL) As Laos and Japan prepare to celebrate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025, Japanese businessman Mr. TAKABA Kazumasa, Food Purchasing Div.Leader, SKYLARK Holding Co., Ltd., which operates a restaurant chain, has   shared the company’s efforts to support education and cultural exchange in Laos.

SKYLARK Holding Co., Ltd., which imports coffee from Laos to sell in Japan, has donated over 20,000 books to Lao children through a collaboration with Action with Lao Children (ALC), a non-profit organization. Their journey to help began in 2011 when Japan faced a crisis, and international support, including aid from Laos, inspired them to give back.

“We visited a school library in Pakse, Champassak Province, and saw an opportunity to make a difference. Laos has many ethnic groups, each with their own unique stories and traditions, often shared orally. We wanted to help preserve these stories and encourage reading among Lao children,” said Mr. TAKABA.

To engage young readers, SKYLARK Holding Co., Ltd. has focused on creating visually appealing books, incorporating illustrations and interactive elements such as games to make reading more enjoyable. In addition to book donations, his initiatives include building libraries for primary and secondary schools across Laos.

Looking   ahead, SKYLARK Holding Co., Ltd. plans to provide scholarships for Lao students to pursue bachelor's degrees in Japan. Applicants will undergo testing and interviews facilitated by ALC, with final selections being coordinated through provincial Education and Sports Departments.

This is to promote greater educational opportunities for Lao youth.

SKYLARK Holding Co., Ltd.’s contributions are funded through proceeds from selling Lao coffee in Japan.  

“If Laos and Japan had direct flights, it would further strengthen communication and cooperation between the two countries,” Mr. TAKABA added, emphasizing the importance of enhancing bilateral connectivity.
