(KPL) Vice Minister of Planning and Investment, Ms. Phonevanh Outhavong and Ms Pia Rebello Britto, UNICEF Representative to Laos, recently visited several government and mass organization-led projects in Savannakhet province, supported by UNICEF.

The visit focused on observing the implementation of the innovative parenting support programme, "Love and Care for Every Child" (LCEC), which emphasizes positive parenting, and youth advocacy through youth media reporters.

The visit commenced by paying a courtesy visit to Mr Sanesack Soulisack, the Vice Governor of Savannakhet Province to jointly reflect the past achievements and discuss a way forward the future collaboration in Savannakhet province.

Guided by Ms. Lavanh Southisane, Vice President of Lao Women’s Union, delegates saw first-hand how the LCEC initiative is transforming parenting practices and improving opportunities for children under seven across the Lao PDR.

Recognizing parenting as a critical influence on children’s development, the programme covers essential topics such as maternal and newborn health, sexual and reproductive health, breastfeeding, mother and child nutrition, among others. These topics are delivered through guidebooks, storybooks, videos, and audio recordings.

With backing from the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP) and other partners, the programme has made a difference in the lives of over 40,000 families.

During the visit, Vice Minister Phonevanh also engaged with youth media reporters, celebrating the 20th anniversary of this initiative led by the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism and Lao National Radio, with support from UNICEF. This year's focus is on promoting education through the Kangpanya Lao platform, supported by the European Union, and raising awareness about immunization, backed by the Government of Australia.

"Empowering young people to use their voices is crucial for our country’s development," stated Vice Minister Phonevanh, "Their role in promoting education and health initiatives is vital."

This visit marked Ms Britto’s final high-level engagement as UNICEF Representative to Lao PDR, returning to the province where she began her tenure four years ago.

Reflecting on the youth media initiative, Britto said, "The 20-year journey of this initiative is a testament to the power of partnership and the impact of giving young people a platform to express themselves. The dedication of our young reporters to promoting critical issues is inspiring. Their efforts are instrumental in driving positive change."

As the Lao PDR continues to prioritize education and health, the partnership between the government, UNICEF, and international development partners is crucial in promoting human capital. The focus on digital learning and immunization forms part of a broader strategy to ensure that children and young people have access to quality education and healthcare services.

UNICEF and its partners remain committed to supporting the government’s efforts, creating an environment where every child in the Lao PDR can thrive.
