(KPL) The 5th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Management and related events will be held in Luang Prabang on Oct 17-19, an official told a press conference today Oct 9.

“This meeting is of high importance as it is a high level meeting for discussing, exchanging ideas, determining measures to get ready, respond, prevent and address as well as reduce possible impacts from natural disasters,” said  Mr Prasong Vongkhamchanh, Director General, Social Welfare Department, Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare.

The discussion at the meeting will also be centred round the materialization of ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response and ASEAN Declaration on ONE ASEAN, ONE RESPONSE: ASEAN Responding to Disasters as One in The Region and Outside The Region. The two documents were approved by ASEAN leaders in Vientiane, the Lao PDR in September 2016.

“Today sub-committees in charge of preparations for the meeting are ready and have completed all planned preparations on content, economic, protocol and security affairs, among others according to the guidance given by the committee and management of the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare,” said Mr Prasong.

“The success of the meeting will play an important role in implementing international and ASEAN strategies on preventing, reducing impacts, and providing humanitarian aid to victims of natural and manmade disasters,” said the official.

The first to fourth ASEAN Ministerial Meetings on Disaster Management were held in Cambodia in 2004, Brunei 2014, Cambodia 2015, and Indonesia 2016.
