The amount spent in Republic of Korea by nonresidents using credit and debit cards stood at US$4.86 billion in the April-June period, up 36.1 percent from three months earlier, according to data from the Bank of Korea (BOK).
It marked the highest quarterly figure on record since the BOK began compiling the data in 2012, surpassing the previous record of $3.79 billion set in the second quarter of 2025.
The sharp increase came as a growing number of foreigners visited the country this year.
A total of 10.71 million foreigners visited Republic of Korea in the first six months of the year, up 21.3 percent from a year earlier, according to separate government data.
Meanwhile, the BOK data showed that Republic of Koreans' overseas card spending totaled $5.85 billion in the second quarter, down 4.2 percent from the previous quarter, due to a decline in outbound travelers.
The number of overseas travelers came to 6.63 million in the three-month period, down 20.4 percent from the previous quarter.
