Australian Ambassador Megan Jones met with Mr Vanhxay Phongsavanh, President of the State Inspection Authority and Head of the Anti-Corruption Authority of the Lao PDR, to reaffirm the strong and longstanding partnership between Australia and Laos and discuss cooperation in governance, anti-corruption and transparency.

Ambassador Jones congratulated Mr Vanhxay on his recent appointment, including his election to the Politburo, and recognised his leadership in advancing Lao PDR’s governance agenda. She reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to supporting a stable, prosperous and resilient Laos, building on 74 years of diplomatic relations.
The Ambassador highlighted Australia’s practical support for governance and economic reform through the Public Financial Management programme with the Ministry of Finance, which assists with state-owned enterprise reform, revenue collection mechanisms and capacity building in public finance management.

She also noted Australia’s support for audit and integrity systems through regional initiatives, including the Southeast Asia Government-to-Government programme and the Mekong–Australia Partnership, which provide technical training and capacity building in financial oversight and anti-corruption efforts.
Ambassador Jones and Mr Vanhxay recognised the importance of transparent and accountable institutions in promoting sustainable development, attracting quality investment and strengthening investor confidence.
Both sides agreed to explore further opportunities for cooperation, including capacity building, knowledge exchange and strengthening institutional links between Australia and Lao PDR.
