KPL An academic exchange seminar was held today at the National Academy of Politics and Public Administration (NAPPA) to address pressing global economic trends and regional challenges.

The seminar was co-chaired by Mrs Khamla Keounkham, Vice President of NAPPA, and Ms Benita Sommerville, the Australian Deputy Ambassador to the Lao PDR. Discussions primarily focused on "Understanding Global Economic Trends Amid Changing Global Conditions" and "Current Australia-Laos Socio-Economic Development Cooperation".

Key insights gathered from the speakers' presentations and panel discussions highlighted several critical political and geopolitical perspectives.

The global landscape is increasingly transitioning into a fragmented, multipolar world order. Strategic competition between major superpowers is compelling small and middle powers to employ hedging strategies to safeguard their national interests.

regional organisations like ASEAN face severe challenges in maintaining a balance of power between the United States and China.

Geopolitical crises, including conflicts in the Middle East, have directly disrupted global supply chains. This volatility has driven sharp increases in the prices of oil, chemical fertilisers, and food.

The Lao PDR remains particularly vulnerable to rising fuel costs. Furthermore, high levels of external debt significantly restrict the government’s fiscal space, limiting its capacity to implement subsidy measures to assist citizens.

Adaptation and the Lao PDR's Foreign Strategy

To navigate global volatility, the Lao Government is endeavouring to convert challenges into opportunities by promoting economic and green diplomacy. Laos is also leveraging its cultural and tourism soft power to attract international cooperation.

In terms of foreign policy, Laos remains steadfastly committed to its long-standing principles of peace, independence, democracy, unity, and prosperity. In response to the multipolar world, the Lao PDR is expanding its international integration beyond the ASEAN framework by pursuing partnerships with the BRICS bloc and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Strengthening Bilateral Laos-Australia Cooperation

In response to these developments, the seminar also focused in detail on "Current Australia-Laos Socio-Economic Development Cooperation". The panel discussion featured high-level representatives from both the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFat) in Canberra and the Australian Embassy in Vientiane.
