(KPL) Cassava growers in Pakngum district, Vientiane Capital, are still wait for compensation for the produce they supplied to the Lao-Indochina Group factory several years ago.
Mr Sen, Head of Na Tham Village said that more than 360 households or about 2,000 people in the village are primarily engaged in either agricultural production or animal husbandry as their main source of income.
Villagers used to grow cassava for the Lao-Indochina Group, but two years ago the company announced the closure of their factory due to financial turmoil.
Cassava growers are unsatisfied with the Lao-Indochina Group as it has taken several tonnes of their crops for processing but have yet to pay, according to the village chief.
A number of villagers are worried about their income as they have borrowed money from banks to invest in farming cassava, he said.
Only about 20 per cent of growers in the village are continuing to grow cassava. They sell their crops to other cassava companies even though they know they will make less profit from doing so now, he said.
Some growers have decided to stop planting cassava due to the reduced income potential, and high transportation costs.
