(KPL) A total of 228 road accidents were recorded nationwide during the Lao New Year celebrations from April 12–18, 2026, resulting in 362 injuries and 23 deaths, according to authorities.

The figures represent a decline compared to the same period last year, with accidents down by 85 cases, injuries reduced by 159, and fatalities decreasing by three.

Speaking on April 20, Colonel Khamson Sidaavong, Director of the Traffic Police Department, said the data reflects ongoing efforts to improve road safety during the holiday period.

The highest number of accidents was reported in Vientiane with 32 cases, including six deaths, followed by Vientiane Province and Savannakhet Province with 31 accidents each. Other provinces with notable figures included Champasak Province with 16 accidents and five deaths, and Luang Prabang Province with 15 accidents and two deaths.

Additional reports showed 14 accidents in Attapeu Province, 13 each in Oudomxay Province, Bolikhamxay Province, and Saravane Province, as well as 11 in Luang Namtha Province. Lower figures were recorded in Khammouane Province, Phongsaly Province, Sekong Province, Xayabury Province, Bokeo Province, Houaphanh Province, Xieng Khouang Province, and Xaysomboun Province.

Authorities also recorded two accidents on the expressway with no fatalities, and two additional accidents in the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone, which resulted in one death.

Officials identified the main causes of accidents as drunk driving, speeding, failure to yield, unsafe overtaking, and improper lane changes.

Authorities continue to urge the public to strictly follow traffic regulations to further reduce accidents and improve road safety during major holidays.
