The Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2026, themed “Shaping a Shared Future,” comes at a critical moment when tariff tensions, geopolitical rivalry and growing scepticism towards globalisation threaten to undermine decades of economic integration. Against this backdrop, the Boao Forum continues to stand as one of Asia’s most significant platforms for promoting economic connectivity, policy coordination and a stronger collective regional voice.
Founded in 2001, the BFA was created to facilitate high-level dialogue among governments, business leaders and academics across Asia. Over time, the forum has evolved beyond a traditional conference into a dynamic platform where ideas on regional cooperation are debated, refined and translated into practical initiatives. It has also reflected Asia’s broader transformation from a peripheral player in global governance into a central pillar of the world economy.
Today, Asia contributes more than half of global economic growth and plays an increasingly influential role in trade, finance and technological innovation. However, the region also faces considerable challenges, including supply chain disruptions, uneven economic development and rising geopolitical tensions. In such a complex environment, platforms like the BFA are essential not only for encouraging dialogue but also for building consensus on practical solutions that support sustainable and inclusive growth.

One of the forum’s most significant contributions lies in strengthening regional economic connectivity. Asia’s development has long been closely linked to cross-border trade, infrastructure integration and expanding financial networks. By bringing together policymakers, economists and industry leaders, the BFA provides an important space to explore new frameworks for cooperation that can further enhance these linkages and promote shared prosperity.
Emerging sectors such as renewable energy and green technology have become central to the forum’s agenda. As one of the world’s largest energy consumers and a key driver of the global energy transition, Asia has a crucial role to play in promoting sustainable development. Through discussions on clean energy investment, technology transfer and sustainable infrastructure, the forum helps to build a regional ecosystem capable of addressing climate challenges while maintaining economic momentum.
Another key area of discussion is the modernisation of financial infrastructure, particularly in cross-border payment systems. As trade and investment flows across Asia continue to expand, efficient and secure payment mechanisms are becoming increasingly important. Initiatives focusing on digital finance, payment connectivity and innovative settlement systems have the potential to reduce transaction costs, improve financial inclusion and strengthen economic integration throughout the region.
Beyond sectoral discussions, the broader value of the BFA lies in reinforcing Asia’s collective voice in global economic governance. For much of modern economic history, Asian economies were largely rule-takers, operating within frameworks designed elsewhere. However, the region’s rapid economic rise has fundamentally reshaped this dynamic.
Today, Asian countries are increasingly contributing to the development of new rules, standards and institutions that better reflect the realities of a multipolar global economy. Platforms such as the BFA enable policymakers and thought leaders to exchange perspectives, identify common interests and coordinate actions that support regional and global stability.
This role is particularly important at a time when global governance institutions are under growing strain. Complex challenges such as climate change, financial instability and technological disruption require greater international cooperation rather than division. In this context, regional forums like the BFA complement global institutions by providing a space where trust, understanding and collaboration can be built gradually.
The theme of this year’s conference, “Shaping a Shared Future,” captures Asia’s broader aspiration for continued openness and cooperation. The region’s economic success has been built on connectivity, collaboration and mutual development, and preserving these principles will be crucial in navigating future uncertainties.
Rather than turning towards protectionism or economic nationalism, Asia has an opportunity to demonstrate that cooperation remains the most effective pathway to sustainable development. By fostering dialogue, encouraging innovation and promoting practical partnerships, the Boao Forum for Asia continues to play a vital role in advancing this vision.
As the global economic landscape continues to evolve, the significance of the forum is likely to grow further. Its ability to convene diverse stakeholders and facilitate constructive discussions makes it an indispensable platform for shaping the next phase of Asian economic integration and strengthening regional resilience in an increasingly uncertain world.
