(KPL)The government of the Lao PDR, in partnership with the Australian government and UNICEF, delivered assistive devices to children with disabilities in Xiengkhouang Province in Nov 25 as part of the Disability Grant Plus Initiative.
The initiative supports 496 children and 464 families through monthly cash grants and essential assistive devices. The latest distribution, benefiting 239 children across Pek, Phoukoud, and Khoun districts, included specialized wheelchairs, standing frames, adjusted shoes, and learning materials. These devices aim to improve access to education, healthcare, and community participation for children with disabilities.
A comprehensive Family Support Program complements the initiative by equipping parents and caregivers with skills to better support their children. Additionally, efforts to enhance financial literacy empower families to manage resources sustainably, fostering long-term benefits.
During the ceremony, Vice Minister of Labor and Social Welfare, Mr. Lee Pao Yang, emphasized the government’s dedication to inclusivity. "Today's event reflects our commitment to ensuring every child, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to thrive. These devices not only address immediate needs but also invest in our nation’s future," he said.
The Disability Grant Plus Initiative, launched in 2020, provides monthly cash grants of 400,000 Kip per beneficiary to cover essentials such as nutrition, healthcare, and education. The inclusion of assistive devices further amplifies its impact, granting children greater independence and community engagement.
UNICEF Country Representative Mr. Bilal Durrani reaffirmed the organization's commitment to inclusivity. "This handover is a collective stride towards ensuring all children, regardless of disability, can achieve their potential," he stated.
The program also focuses on capacity building for local officials and raising community awareness about disability issues to ensure lasting progress. By fostering inclusive environments and empowering families, the initiative is creating meaningful change for children with disabilities across Xiengkhouang Province.
