(KPL/VNA) The central province of Nghe An on May 20 held a memorial and burial service for the remains of 76 Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who laid down their lives in Laos.

The remains were found in the Lao provinces of Xaysomboun, Vientiane, and Xiangkhouang by a repatriation team of the provincial Military Command during the 2024-2025 dry season.

At the ceremony held at the war martyrs’ cemetery in Nghi Loc district, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Phung Thanh Vinh said that carrying a noble international duty, many Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts heroically joined Lao people in their struggle for national liberation and independence. Many of them sacrificed their lives in the country, including more than 12,000 soldiers laying down in the three provinces of Xaysomboun, Vientiane, and Xiangkhouang.

On this occasion, Vinh thanked the Party, Government and people of Laos, particularly those in the three provinces for taking care of and protecting Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts, as well as paying attention to the graves of Vietnamese martyrs.

Sivilay Sengchaleun, Deputy Governor of Xiengkhouang, representing leaders of the three provinces, expressed their deep gratitude to the Party, Government, army and people of Vietnam for their wholehearted, righteous and valuable support for the Lao revolution.

He affirmed that the friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos will further flourish.

Nghe An province and the three Lao provinces have located and collected remains of 12,740 Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who laid down their lives in Laos during the wars. Of that, 1,680 sets of remains were identified with information about names and hometowns of the martyrs.
