(KPL/Xinhua) China Telecom has recently held a joint event with Lao Telecommunications Limited (ETL) in Laos to launch the Tiantong satellite direct-to-phone service, marking the international expansion of China's Tiantong satellite services, as well as the implementation of satellite-enabled smartphone connectivity services in the country.

The two sides signed a cooperation agreement to deploy the Tiantong satellite system in Laos, and jointly unveiled the "Tiantong Satellite Connectivity for 100 Villages" initiative that will deliver specialized satellite equipment and services to upgrade emergency communication capabilities in the country’s remote villages.

Zhang Xin, general manager of China Telecom Satellite Corporation Limited, hailed Tiantong's satellite direct-to-phone service in Laos as a major step forward for its satellite technology in delivering globally accessible telecommunication services, noting that China Telecom will collaborate with global partners to support Laos' digital economy strategy and to accelerate the expansion of Tiantong satellite services across South Asia and Southeast Asia.

Watana, deputy general manager of ETL, said that the collaboration between the two sides will provide convenient telecommunication services for those in Laos' remote areas, allowing for greater capacity and broader coverage of the country's communications infrastructure.

The service will become a crucial tool to support socioeconomic development, social stability, emergency response and disaster relief work, he added.
