(KPL) The first annual exchange workshop between the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) and Lao civil society organisations (CSOs) took place on December 5-6 in Vientiane, with support from Citizen Engagement for Good Governance Accountability and Rule of Law (CEGGA II).
The purpose of the workshop was to provide a platform for the government and CSOs to exchange on sector topics and facilitate smooth cooperation. Discussion topics included policy and development plans for agriculture and forestry, the strategic plan for Lao CSOs, and achievements of CSOs in agriculture, forestry and rural development.
The workshop was chaired by Mr. Thongphat Vongmany, Vice Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, and attended by representatives from over 30 CSOs active in agriculture, forestry and rural development across the Lao PDR. Participants also included the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) as well as departments from Luang Prabang, Khammouan, Xiengkhouang, Huaphan and Bokeo.
During the workshop, Dr Pamela Jawad, GIZ Programme Director of the CEGGA Programme, delivered remarks highlighting the impressive contributions of CSOs to rural development, agriculture and forestry in the Lao PDR while underlining the importance of good cooperation between ministries and civil society.
The workshop took place in a lively atmosphere, with participants actively discussing achievements, challenges and lessons learnt of project implementation, the regulatory framework and the strategic plans of MAF and Lao CSOs. CEGGA II supports a series of annual exchange workshops between Government institutions at central and sub-national level and Lao CSOs with the aim to strengthen cooperation and to promote meaningful participation in policy processes and development projects for inclusive development.
The CEGGA Programme is a joint initiative of the Government of the Lao PDR and its “Team Europe” partners, Switzerland, Germany and EU. Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been tasked to implement the programme on behalf of Team Europe and in close cooperation with Lao partners to achieve the overall objective to increase citizens’ engagement in the national development process of the Lao PDR through the promotion of good governance, human rights, and the rule of law.
