(KPL) In a major step toward digital transformation, the Laos is preparing to roll out modern digital identity cards for citizens across the country.

The initiative is part of the government's broader push to build a digital government, economy, and society, aligning with the Party's strategic vision for modernization. The Ministry of Public Security has been tasked with spearheading the implementation by developing digital infrastructure, enhancing IT capacity among security personnel, and updating legal frameworks to support the new system.

The digital ID card project was officially launched in July 2024 at the National Convention Center in Vientiane. The high-profile event was attended by Lao President and Party General Secretary Thongloun Sisoulith and Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary To Lam. Both leaders, along with their respective Ministers of Public Security, signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly implement the initiative.

The project includes the construction of a centralized Citizen Data Center, the integration of population data, and the transformation of this data into a secure, digital format. The Ministry has also prioritized training and technical preparation to ensure a smooth transition.

With preparations complete, the Ministry of Public Security has announced that it is now ready to officially issue digital identity cards to the Lao public.

This initiative marks a significant milestone in Lao-Vietnamese cooperation and reflects Laos’ commitment to embracing the digital age.
