(KPL) China has ranked the first largest foreign investor in Laos investing more than US$ 7.2 billion in various industries and sharing 25.2% of the total foreign direct investment in Laos.
Some 49.8% of Chinese investment goes to mining sector, 18.3% to hydropower industry and 8.9 % to agricultural sector.
China is also the second largest trade partner of Laos following Thailand.
Last year, the bilateral trade between Laos and China was valued at US$ 426 million including US$ 218.4 million as export from Laos, equivalent to 29.8% of Laos’ total export, and US$ 207.6 million as import from China, representing 18.36% of Laos’ total import.
Laos’ export to china included timber products, copper, and rubber latex. Meanwhile Laos’ import from China was dominated by electrical appliances, machinery, airplane parts, and automobile parts, among others.
“Today, foreign investment in various areas in the Lao PDR is on a constant rise as the government has opened investment opportunities to foreign investors, improved legal instruments and policies to create favourable conditions for the investment of foreign companies,” said Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Khamlien Pholsena.
