(KPL) The British Embassy organized the first Sir John Addis Memorial Lecture on October 26th at the Lao Textile Museum in Ban Nong Tha Tai to celebrate Lao-UK fashion links.
Sir John Addis was British Ambassador to Laos from 1960 to 1962 and was a passionate collector of Lao silk and textiles. His collection, which includes hand-woven Lao sins, sarongs, bags, belts and many others, is now part of the famous Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the leading international museum of design and décor.
The memorial lecture was attended by 50 invited guests from Lao and UK fashion businesses. It was opened by Lord David Puttnam, the UK’s trade and cultural envoy to Laos, who highlighted the importance of the fashion and textile industry for both Laos and the UK.
The family of Sir John Addis also contributed to the event, sending a video message by Sir John’s nephew David Addis, recorded at the family estate in Sussex, England. David Addis stated that his uncle would be “very proud to see his legacy of collecting Lao and other Asian craft products live on today.”
The keynote lecture was given by Daniel Marcus, a British textile expert and head of Soie de Lune, a London-based company that was founded in 2004, which has its own silk-weaving workshop in Vientiane producing fabrics for exclusive interior design.
In his keynote address, Daniel Marcus, who has extensively studied the Sir John Addis Collection of Lao fabrics at the Victoria and Albert Museum, highlighted Sir John’s passion for Laos and its silk weaving and showed how much John Addis valued good craftsmanship and quality in the items that he selected for his collection.
