(KPL) On Tuesday, Laos and Japan formalized a 1.27 billion yen (USD 8.1 million) grant for the improvement of Provincial Teacher Development Centres in nine Lao provinces. The agreement was signed by Japan’s Ambassador to Laos, Koizumi Tsutomu, and Laos’ Ambassador to Japan, Anlavan Phongsamouth, during Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone’s official visit to Japan, marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties and 60 years of Japan’s volunteer support to Laos.

The grant will upgrade facilities and training equipment, like projectors and sound systems, at centres vital for teacher training in areas without dedicated colleges. This project aligns with Laos’ priority to enhance teacher skills and improve education quality.

The two leaders also discussed strengthening ties through ASEAN-Japan, Mekong-Japan, and UN frameworks. Japan continues to support Laos in areas such as human resource development, health, and infrastructure, and is backing Laos’ 2024 ASEAN chairmanship.
