(KPL)  “The sale of fake land deeds has become a hot issue in seven districts of Vientiane Capital,” said Director of the Vientiane Natural Resources and Environment Department, Mr Bounhome Leuangsavath.

The fake land deed problem has spread to several districts including, Sikhottabong, Naxaithong, Chanthabouly, Xaythany, Hadxaifong and Xaysettha, as well as Vientiane Capital, Mr Bounhome disclosed on 23 June.

Vientiane authorities have confirmed that 36 people have been deceived into buying the fake land deeds and have lost approximately 560 billion kip (US$69 million).

The land deed fraud started in Vientiane Capital in February and since then, 17 people have fallen victim to the scam.

The Vientiane land management authorities were informed about the first case of fake land deed in Vientiane Capital in February of this year and through June, an additional 22 fake deeds were discovered causing a loss of 553 billion kip.

“All victims are people with large financial reserves who have given money to fake land deed owners wishing for high interest in return,” Mr Bounhome said.

As the result, Vientiane authorities recently issued a warning to the public to be aware of this fake deed scam.

The fake land deeds were made with a colour copier, he added. Currently, six wrongdoers that were involved in fake land deed scam have been arrested.
