KPL The Department of Forestry under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment is conducting a four-day Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop on forest fire prevention and suppression planning from June 8–11, 2026, in Sangthong District, Vientiane Capital. The training brings together forestry officials and technical personnel from central and district levels to strengthen local capacity in preventing and managing forest fires.

The workshop is chaired by Mr. Somvang Phimmavong, Director General of the Department of Forestry, and attended by representatives of the Sangthong District Office of Agriculture and Environment, forest fire prevention specialists, including experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), as well as relevant stakeholders.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Somvang highlighted the growing challenges posed by forest fires and deforestation, which continue to threaten biodiversity, environmental sustainability, and local livelihoods. He noted that recent fire incidents have underscored the need for stronger prevention measures and more effective planning at the community level.
He also emphasized that forest fire prevention has become increasingly important in light of evolving international requirements, particularly the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which places greater scrutiny on products linked to deforestation and land clearing through burning. Strengthening forest management and fire prevention efforts will therefore not only help protect natural resources but also support sustainable economic development and international market access.
The training is designed to develop a network of qualified trainers capable of supporting forest fire prevention planning in local communities. Through a practical Training of Trainers approach, participants are learning how to conduct community consultations, collect field data, develop prevention plans, and prepare implementation strategies tailored to local conditions.
Organizers expect the workshop to enhance local ownership of forest fire prevention efforts and contribute to more effective and coordinated responses to forest fire risks, while supporting the country's broader goals of sustainable forest management and environmental protection.
