The authorities of the Planting Sector have noted that approximately 2,000 families in 33 villages hit by the grasshoppers will face food shortages this year if they don’t get urgent assistance and subsidies.
The Deputy Head of the Planting Sector of the Agriculture and Forestry Department of Luang Prabang Province, Mrs Soudalath Keoboualapha told the Lao News Agency on Wednesday that the devastated areas are 1,000 hectares of upland rice farms, 1,000 hectares of low land rice fields, and 300 hectares of maize.
This is the first assistance that the government has provided to the victims of the grasshoppers. Non-government or organizations in Laos are also preparing to collect real information about the grasshopper-affected areas.
