(KPL) The newly-built Attapeu airport is due to open for public at the end of this month to support air transport and promote tourism in Attapeu Province.

Construction of the Attapeu airport started in 2013 and represents a total investment of 289 billion kip (about US$36.19 million) by the Hoang Anh Gia Lai Attapeu Agriculture Development Company, the largest investor in rubber tree plantations in Laos.

The airport construction, a government project to support both domestic and overseas airplanes in the future, is expected to officially open and be operational on 30 May.

It aims to spur the economic growth, socio-economic development, and tourism in Attapeu Province.

The airport is part of the government’s plan to materialise socio-economic development in 2010-2020, change the country from being landlocked to land-linked and graduate the country from the list of least developed countries by 2020.

This is one of the two airport projects that the Lao government has licensed to this group. The airport will be built on 200 hectares, in two phases. In the first phase, 2013-2020, the airport will mainly serve small aircrafts like the ATR 72, Fokker 70 and 100, and the MA-60. After 2020, once construction is complete, it will be able to accommodate bigger aircraft like the Airbus A323 and Boeing 777.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai Attapeu Agriculture Development Company is a subsidiary of Doan Nguyen Duc's group.
