Mr. Sonexay Siphandone, Prime Minister of the Lao PDR, met with Mr. Le Minh Hung, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, on the sidelines of the 48th ASEAN Summit held on May 7-8 in Cebu.
The two Prime Ministers expressed pleasure at holding their first official meeting together, continuing the long-standing tradition of close cooperation between Laos and Vietnam. Both sides reaffirmed the special solidarity, mutual trust, and the “uniquely one-of-a-kind in the world” relationship shared by the two neighboring countries.
The leaders highly valued the continued expansion of the great friendship, special solidarity, comprehensive cooperation, and strategic partnership between the two nations. They noted that political, defense, and security cooperation remains a strong pillar of bilateral ties, while economic cooperation has also achieved increasingly practical results.
Looking ahead, the two sides agreed to coordinate closely in organizing activities for the Laos-Vietnam Friendship and Solidarity Year in 2027, which will commemorate the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation between the two countries.
They also pledged to continue implementing agreements reached between the two Politburos and the outcomes of the 48th session of the Laos-Vietnam Cooperation Committee, particularly by accelerating strategic connectivity and infrastructure projects to ensure concrete and effective progress.
On this occasion, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone congratulated Vietnam on the successful first session of the XVI National Assembly held on April 6, 2026, and extended congratulations to Prime Minister Le Minh Hung on assuming his new leadership role. He also expressed appreciation for Vietnam’s longstanding support and assistance to Laos over the years.
Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone invited Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung and his wife to pay an official visit to the Lao PDR at a mutually convenient time, an invitation that was warmly accepted.
In return, Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung congratulated Laos on the successful first session of the X National Assembly held in March 2026 and praised Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone on being entrusted with the leadership of the Lao government.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung also invited Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone to visit Vietnam officially and attend the ASEAN Future Forum 2026, an invitation that was gladly accepted by the Lao Prime Minister.
