Women share almost 30% of new National Assembly seats

KPL (KPL) The National Assembly announced yesterday the result of the election of the 8th National Assembly (NA) legislature members claiming females share 27% of the new membership of the assembly.

(KPL) The National Assembly announced yesterday the result of the election of the 8th National Assembly (NA) legislature members claiming females share 27% of the new membership of the assembly.

One hundred and forty nine members, including 41 females, have been elected from the total of 210 candidates contesting for seats at the National Assembly in the March 20 election.

The majority of the new membership of the National Assembly is represented by Lao-Tai ethnic group (119 members), followed by Mon-kamea (20), Hmong-Eiwmien (6) and Chinese-Tibet (4).

The election of the members of the National Assembly is a process, where all Loa citizens exercise their political democratic right to elect candidates with completed criteria as described in the Election Law and to sit at the National Assembly to exercise the rights of the entire Lao ethnics.

“The election was held from: 7:00 am and ended at 17: 00pm on March 20, 2016 with full ownership and concurrence by the 18 respective constituencies entire the country as described in the Law and Decree of the National Election Commission,” Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Koukeo Akhamountry told a press conference yesterday.

The total number of eligible voters of the recently held election of the National Assembly was over 3.73 million including over 1.85 million females. The actual number of voters was more than 3.65 million (women: over 1.79 million), representing 97. 9 % of the total eligible voters.
