Viengkham Set to Produce 9,200 Tonnes of Paddy Yearly

KPL (KPL) Viengkham district in Luang Prabang Province is expected to produce 9,200 tonnes of paddy per year from now until 2020, according to an ambitious plan of the District Agriculture and Forestry Division.

(KPL) Viengkham district in Luang Prabang Province is expected to produce 9,200 tonnes of paddy per year from now until 2020, according to an ambitious plan of the District Agriculture and Forestry Division.

Currently, Viengkham farmers produce paddy on almost 350 hectares in the rainy season and on 207 hectares in the dry season, with more than 3, 780 hectares of upland rice farms.

The average yield capacity is set to reach five tonnes of rice per hectare in the rainy and dry seasons, and 1.7 tonnes per hectare from upland rice farm.

The annual average rice yield per person is 285.32 kg, according to the plan.

The plan will continue to promote livestock raising expanding the number of cattle to 7,486 buffaloes, 10,980 cows, 45,639 pigs, 9,329 goats and 199,988 heads of poultries, said Deputy Head of The Agriculture and Forestry office of Viengkham district Sanaphay Kounlamany.

The Viengkham plan is made in response to the agricultural promotion plan of Luang Prabang Province to ensure sufficient food consumption in the district and its yield surplus for export to other province.

Agriculture authorities dispatched by Luang Prabang Province, are currently giving advice to locals on proper plantation and animal raising techniques.

Last year, 86,900 tonnes of dry season rice crops were harvested in Vientiane Capital. Meanwhile, the rainy season rice harvest yielded 236,740 tonnes of rice from 53,800 ha. The harvest represented 99 percent of the set target.
