Laos, China Reaffirm Strategic Partnership as China-South Asia Expo Opens in Kunming

KPL Laos and China reaffirmed their strong and longstanding partnership as the 10th China-South Asia Expo and the 30th China Kunming Import and Export Fair opened in Kunming, Yunnan Province, on June 11.


Addressing the opening ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Santiphab Phomvihane highlighted the significance of 2026 as the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Laos and China and the Year of Laos-China Friendship. He noted that the two countries continue to enjoy a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership based on the “Four Goods” spirit of good neighbors, good friends, good comrades, and good partners.


Mr. Santiphab said Laos remains committed to supporting the Belt and Road Initiative and further strengthening cooperation with China in connectivity, trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges. He described the Laos-China Railway as a flagship project that has significantly enhanced regional connectivity, trade flows, tourism, and economic development since its launch.
The Deputy Prime Minister also invited Chinese and international investors to explore opportunities in Laos, particularly in agriculture, clean energy, logistics, infrastructure, tourism, and environmentally sustainable industries. He emphasized Laos’ commitment to creating a favorable investment climate and promoting green and sustainable development.


Speaking at the opening ceremony, CPC Yunnan Provincial Committee Secretary Wang Ning noted that the Laos-China Railway has exceeded expectations, with cross-border freight services and trade volumes growing steadily. He said the railway has become a key corridor linking China with Southeast Asia and supporting regional economic integration.
The expo, held under the theme “Solidarity and Coordination for Future Development,” has attracted participants from more than 80 countries and regions. It serves as a major platform for promoting trade, investment, technological cooperation, and regional connectivity between China, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and other parts of the world.
The Lao delegation also invited participants to visit the Laos pavilion to explore trade and investment opportunities and experience the country's culture and development potential.
