(KPL) The National University of Laos (NUoL) in Vientiane Capital made a great showing at the 1st Lao University Games which was held from March 5-15. The university came away with 35 gold medals and was named the champion of the games.

(KPL) The National University of Laos (NUoL) in Vientiane Capital made a great showing at the 1st Lao University Games which was held from March 5-15. The university came away with 35 gold medals and was named the champion of the games.
The National University of Laos athletes won 35 gold medals, 26 silver medals and 46 bronze medals at the1st Lao University Games.
The National University of Laos was ranked first in medal tally followed by the Health Sciences University as second, and the National Security Academy as the third ranked.
“The games aim to provide an opportunity for Lao students to develop and show their skills as well as to strengthen friendships between students and teachers,” said Professor Dr Soukkongseng Sayaleuth.
He said, the competition also aims to determine the best athletes to complete at the ASEAN University Games which will be held in Singapore from July 10 to 19, 2016.
The 1st Lao University Games had 1,455 athletes from universities and colleges along with trainers and teachers.
The sports competitions included football, track and field, Futsal, volleyball, beach volleyball, sepak takraw, petanque, taekwondo, table tennis, badminton and basketball.
The closing ceremony was held at the National University of Laos’s stadium in Vientiane Capital on 15 March in the presence of Acting Minister of Education and Sports, Mrs Sengduean Larchanthaboun, NUoL President, Professor Dr Soukkongseng Sayaleuth, senior officials from ministry, teachers from the NUoL and provincial universities, and sponsors.
The 2nd Lao University Games will be held at Champassak University in 2019.
