(KPL) In a deeply revered Lao New Year tradition, thousands of devotees and visitors gathered in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Luang Prabang on April 17 to witness the ceremonial procession of the sacred Phra Bang Buddha image, a symbol of spiritual protection and national identity.

The ritual began at the Ho Phra Bang, where senior monks performed ancient chanting rites to invite the revered image for its annual public blessing. The statue was then placed on an ornate palanquin and carried in a grand procession through the historic town to Wat Mai Suwannaphummaram.

Accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of traditional music, conch shells, and gongs, the procession reflected a blend of Buddhist devotion and centuries-old royal customs. Monks and novices, led by nine senior elders, walked in solemn formation, followed by officials and a large crowd of residents and international visitors.

Among those attending were Bounleuam Manivong, President of the Provincial People’s Council, and Naly Sisoulith, alongside local authorities.

At Wat Mai, the Phra Bang image was enshrined in the ordination hall, where worshippers gathered to offer prayers and receive blessings before participating in the sacred water-bathing ritual.

The ceremonial bathing, believed to bring good fortune and purification, will continue for three days and nights through April 19. The image will then be returned to its home at Ho Phra Bang on April 20, followed by a candlelit procession and a traditional performance by the Phalak Phalam Theater.

For many, the ritual is more than a celebration—it is a powerful expression of faith, heritage, and the enduring cultural soul of Laos
