President Thongloun Meets EU Council President Charles Michel to Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation

(KPL) On October 11, 2024, in Vientiane, Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith welcomed Charles Michel, President of the European Council, during his visit to attend the 19th East Asia Summit hosted by Laos.

President Thongloun expressed his appreciation for Michel’s visit and participation in the summit, emphasizing that it will further strengthen the long-standing friendship and cooperation between Laos and the EU. Both sides are set to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025.

The meeting highlighted the significant progress in Laos-EU cooperation, characterized by regular high-level exchanges and mutual support in both regional and international arenas. Discussions also focused on ASEAN-EU cooperation, as well as regional and global issues of shared interest.

President Thongloun briefed Michel on Laos’ socio-economic development policies, particularly efforts to promote regional integration, and encouraged continued EU support in these areas. He also expressed gratitude on behalf of the Lao government and people for the EU’s valuable contributions toward the country’s sustainable development goals.

In response, Charles Michel thanked President Thongloun for the warm welcome and reaffirmed the EU's commitment to further enhancing bilateral cooperation. He also congratulated Laos on its ASEAN Chairmanship and wished the country success in hosting the ASEAN Summits.
