(KPL) The Meeting of Governors and Mayors of ASEAN Capitals (MGMAC) and the ASEAN Mayors Forum (AMF) in 2024 under the theme "Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience for Sustainable Urban Development in ASEAN Cities" were held in Vientiane today, Sep 18, 2024.

The events were under the chairmanship of Mr. Atsaphangthong Siphandone, Mayor of Vientiane.

The meetings were attended by Mr. Sonexay Siphandone, Prime Minister of Laos, as well as ASEAN city leaders, and representatives from member countries. The events will also include participation from ASEAN Secretary-General.

On this occasion, Mr. Sonexay Siphandone extended high praise to MGMAC and AMF participants for their excellent work, noting that the events will be a valuable opportunity for ASEAN capital city mayors to discuss and enhance their understanding of the role of urban development and management.

Mayor Atsaphangthong stated that MGMAC and AMF have been implemented for 12 years, since 2012. These mechanisms have provided a platform for ASEAN local leaders to exchange lessons and address the challenges facing their respective capitals.

For this year's events, Vientiane has chosen a theme that aligns with Laos’ 2024 ASEAN Chairmanship theme: “Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience for Sustainable Development of ASEAN Cities.” This theme focuses on five key areas: livable and sustainable cities, green tourism, sustainable economic development, environmentally sustainable cities, and climate resilience.

The goal is to share perspectives and collaboratively establish policies for concrete implementation.

Recent initiatives and programs in this field, along with their significance, have drawn increasing public attention. With its history of colonization and civil war, the country has come to recognize the importance of peace on a profound level. Against this backdrop, the government and higher education institutions have identified peace education for young people as a national priority. Since 2023, higher education institutions in Timor-Leste have actively responded to the social demand to go beyond mere knowledge transfer and instead foster peaceful values and civic consciousness as a foundation for building sustainable peace.
