(KPL) Vientiane Province has reported that the Nam Ngum River Basin development project has been 87% completed and is expected to be open to domestic and foreign visitors on June 30.

Mr Khamphong Phanpadith, Chairman of Khamphong Group Co., Ltd. said in his recent interview to the media that the Nam Ngum River Basin tourism development project in Keo-oudom District, Vientiane Province is one of infrastructure development projects designed to promote tourism in the Mekong Sub-region Phase 2.

Financed with a grant funding from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the project was commenced in July 2021.

The project was initially scheduled to be completed in July 2023 but it has been postponed for one more year due to the addition of more activities.

The main activities of the projects include the reconstruction of a concrete access road which is 6-m wide and 6.37 km long and a 0.67-km walkway in the harbour area.

“We have built viewpoints along the road, built ditches on the road sides, embankments, service points, a boat dock, a welcome gate, improved the scenery, indoor and outdoor parking areas, garbage collection areas, viewing walkways, accessible facilities for visitors with physical disabilities, and shops,” said Mr Khamfong Phanpadith.

“Of course, when the development project is completed, we will see impressive changes, especially in terms of beauty and facilities, so that this place, traditionally known as Sea of Laos, will have wonderful scenery and be suitable for recreational activities,” said Mr. Khamphong.

“Once the infrastructure development project is completed, I will seek an approval from the Vientiane Provincial Government for a feasibility study into the building of ziplines connecting the mainland with islands in the Nam Ngum River basin,” Mr Khamphong added.
