(KPL) The Minister of Public Works and Transport, Mr. Leklay Sivilay, on December 30, 2025, led a high-level delegation to inspect ongoing upgrade and expansion works at Pakse International Airport, underscoring the government’s push to meet international standards and accelerate tourism and economic growth in southern Laos.

During the site visit, airport officials briefed the minister on a three-phase master plan designed to expand capacity, improve safety, and position Pakse as a regional aviation gateway.

According to Mr. Noukone Keobouavanh, Director of Pakse International Airport, the first phase focuses on expanding the passenger terminal—particularly the departure hall—to accommodate up to 300 passengers per flight. The phase also includes upgrades to security equipment, renovation of the aircraft apron, improvements to parking areas, and enhancements to electrical systems.

A second phase will study the feasibility of extending the runway from 2,400 meters to 3,000 meters, enabling the airport to receive larger, long-haul aircraft. Looking further ahead, authorities are also examining potential sites for a new international airport in Champasak Province to serve as a major aviation hub for southern Laos and the Mekong sub-region.

Officials reported that the current terminal expansion is about 30 percent complete, with construction being fast-tracked to meet a July 2026 completion target.

Minister Leklay stressed that Pakse International Airport is the “gateway” to southern Laos, calling for strict adherence to international technical standards, uncompromising aviation safety, and improved passenger convenience and comfort—particularly given Champasak’s role as a key tourism destination.

Once completed, the expansion is expected to significantly enhance the province’s ability to welcome international visitors while supporting trade, logistics, and economic connectivity across the southern corridor of the country.
