(KPL) The Department of Public Works and Transport of Vientiane Capital has announced new traffic directions for nine major routes in the city centre to support the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, with changes taking effect from Feb 28, 2026.

Authorities said infrastructure improvements have been completed, including asphalt resurfacing, installation of new traffic signs, upgraded signal systems and updated road markings.

Under the new scheme, several roads previously operating as one-way routes have been converted to two-way traffic, particularly along Don Chan Road, François Ngin Road, Nokeokoummane Road, Manthathourath Road and Gallieni Road. Meanwhile, traffic direction on Fa Ngum Road and Chao Anou Road has been adjusted to improve circulation.

Mahosot Road will operate as a two-way route exclusively for BRT buses, while general vehicles will continue to use designated one-way lanes with specific turning restrictions.

Officials noted that BRT buses will operate against normal traffic flow in certain sections linking Samsenthai, Mahosot, Setthathirath, Souphanouvong and Sithane roads. Some turning movements for general vehicles, particularly along Samsenthai Road, will be restricted to ensure safety and smooth operation.

Traffic police will be deployed at key intersections during the initial implementation period to guide motorists and maintain order.
