(KPL) Household waste generation in the Lao PDR has reached approximately 6,900 tons per day nationwide, while access to waste collection services remains below 50 percent, according to a report presented by Deputy Minister Detxongkham Thammavong of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport on Feb 23.
The report noted that Vientiane Capital accounts for about 15 percent of total household waste generated nationwide. Limited collection coverage has led to improper disposal practices in many areas, including open dumping and waste burning, contributing to air pollution and public health risks.
Officials also identified key challenges, including insufficient legal frameworks, limited budgets and infrastructure for waste services, and inadequate monitoring and management of landfill sites, many of which are reaching capacity ahead of schedule.
Authorities said the findings highlight the urgent need to strengthen waste management systems and expand service access to support environmental protection and urban development.
