(KPL) Champasak Province, a cultural and natural treasure in southern Laos, is experiencing a surge in tourism, driven by its rich heritage, iconic landscapes, and strategic promotional efforts.
Renowned for destinations such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site Wat Phou, the awe-inspiring Khone Phapheng and Somphamit waterfalls, the cool-climate Paksong Coffee Garden, and the expansive Bolaven Plateau, the province continues to attract both domestic and international travelers.
According to the Champasak Department of Information, Culture and Tourism, a total of 298,024 visitors arrived during the first five months of 2025—marking a 1% increase year-on-year and achieving 84% of the province’s annual tourism target of 350,958. The figures include 136,596 domestic tourists, 45,747 border travelers, and 115,681 international visitors. Tourism revenues reached US$35.7 million, or 52% of the province’s annual financial goal.
Officials attribute this growth to the province’s proactive tourism promotion strategy and the successful hosting of signature cultural events. Key festivals such as the Phasaad Hin Festival at Wat Phou, the Coffee and Tea Festival on the Bolaven Plateau, and the 2025 Lao New Year celebrations played a significant role in elevating Champasak’s profile.
Looking ahead, tourism authorities are launching a "Green Season" campaign to attract eco-tourists during the rainy months. The campaign will spotlight outdoor activities such as hiking and nature exploration in scenic destinations like Nong Luang, Nong Ya Theung, Dan Sinxay, Dong Hua Sao, and the Xe Pian–Xe Nam Noi National Parks.
In addition to marketing efforts, the province is investing in infrastructure improvements at international border checkpoints and enhancing access to major tourist sites. Community-based tourism is also a priority, with ongoing support for rural areas to benefit from visitor spending.
Regional integration is another key focus. Champasak is helping drive the creation of a tourism circuit connecting the four southern provinces of Laos, following last year’s regional tourism forum in Saravan. In November, the province will host the 2025 Tourism Exchange Conference, solidifying its role as a southern tourism hub.
Upcoming highlights include the Fruit Festival in Bachiang District (June–July), ethnic product exhibitions organized in collaboration with the Champasak Provincial Handicraft Association, and further development of top-tier sites such as Khone Phapheng and Tad Pha Suam waterfalls.
With its blend of natural splendor, cultural richness, and forward-thinking tourism development, Champasak Province is emerging as a must-visit destination and a model for sustainable tourism in Laos.
