(KPL) The Prime Minister of Laos, Sonexay Siphandone, has officially opened the first phase of the “Khun Kong Leng” eco-tourism site, in a ceremony held on 20 March 2026.

The event marked the launch of a major tourism project in Khammouane Province, attended by senior government officials, including Vansay Phengxavan, Xayxana Khotphouthone and Suansavanh Viyaket.

Developed by the INTRA Group, the site is designed as a sustainable, conservation-focused destination that encourages community participation. It is located in Nakhae village in Hinboun district and spans around 80 hectares, alongside a 350-hectare fossil conservation area and more than 25,000 hectares of protected watershed forest.

According to project developer Phanthachith Inthilath, the aim is to create a new eco-tourism destination that supports local economic development while promoting the province’s natural heritage to both domestic and international visitors.

In its first phase, the project includes 108 guesthouses, four restaurants and bars, and more than 30 tourist activities. It is expected to accommodate up to 3,000 visitors per day, including 300 overnight guests, with a long-term target of attracting up to one million tourists annually.

The site is also notable for its natural features, including more than 20 caves and ancient plant and animal fossils believed to be over 500 million years old, which are expected to form part of a future national geological park.

The development has already created more than 300 jobs for local residents, contributing to income generation and regional economic growth. Future plans include the construction of a hotel, an 18-hole golf course and additional facilities, aimed at establishing the area as a tourism hub in central Laos.

The governor of Khammouane, Somsavat Ounsida, said the project reflects strong investment commitment and has the potential to expand further. He called on relevant sectors to continue supporting tourism development in order to enhance the province’s profile and deliver long-term economic benefits.
