(KPL) In a powerful display of national unity and environmental commitment, the Lao PDR will celebrate National Arbour Day on June 1, 2025, with the planting of more than 997,000 tree seedlings across 1,600 hectares of land nationwide.
This year’s campaign carries a clear message:
“Plant trees today for the future of our children and grandchildren” and “Let’s grow forests as vital resources to protect the environment and combat climate change.”
Announcing the initiative on May 20, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Mr. Linkham Duangsavanh highlighted the dual significance of June 1, which also marks International Children’s Day. “This shared occasion underscores our duty to safeguard natural resources not only for ourselves but for future generations,” he said.
A main ceremony will take place in Vientiane, covering 3 hectares with over 3,000 seedlings of teak, rubber, and rosewood—species chosen for their ecological and economic value. The Ministry, in collaboration with the Capital’s Agriculture and Forestry Department and other sectors, will oversee the event.
Beyond the main event, the Ministry has partnered with local authorities to organize planting activities across the country. In 2025, these efforts aim to collect over 45,000 kg of seeds, raise more than 24.3 million seedlings and reforest over 37,200 hectares.
These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to restore forests, promote sustainable land use, and mitigate climate change.
Minister Linkham emphasized the critical role of forests in supporting agriculture, industry, hydropower, and infrastructure while preserving soil, water, and biodiversity. “Forests stabilize our environment in ways no human technology can replace,” he stressed.
He also called on government agencies, businesses, schools, and communities to organize local planting ceremonies and mobilize widespread participation.
With nearly one million seedlings set to take root this year, National Arbour Day 2025 marks a pivotal step in the Lao PDR’s journey toward environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and forest conservation.
