(KPL) Australian Ambassador to Laos, Megan Jones, paid a courtesy visit to Huaphan Province on March 4, 2025, meeting with Vice Governor Phoutphanh Keovongxay to discuss the Australian government’s ongoing support for the province’s development. The meeting highlighted Australia’s commitment to fostering economic growth, human resource development, and bilateral cooperation in Laos.

During the discussions, Vice Governor Phoutphanh Keovongxay provided an overview of Huaphan Province’s current situation and its unique strengths, emphasizing its significant potential across various sectors. He outlined opportunities for investment in commerce, agriculture, tourism, and other industries, while expressing gratitude for Australia’s consistent support, particularly in the field of education.

“Education has always been a priority for Huaphan Province, and we deeply appreciate the Australian government’s assistance in this area,” said Vice Governor Phoutphanh. He also called on Ambassador Jones to encourage Australian tourists and investors to explore opportunities in the province, further strengthening economic and cultural ties between the two nations.

Ambassador Megan Jones briefed the Vice Governor on Australia’s ongoing support for Laos, with a particular focus on Huaphan Province. She highlighted Australia’s investments in multiple sectors, including education, which underscores the country’s commitment to human resource development in Laos.

“Australia is proud to support Laos in its development journey, and Huaphan Province holds immense potential for growth. We are committed to fostering partnerships that benefit both our nations,” said Ambassador Jones.

One of the most significant Australian investments in the Southeast Asian country is the establishment of the logistics company Linfox in Huaphan Province. Since commencing operations in Laos in 2017, Linfox has invested USD10 million and trained over 200 Lao workers to meet Australian transportation standards. Notably, 50% of Linfox’s workforces in Laos are women, reflecting the company’s commitment to gender equality and inclusive growth.

Linfox’s presence in Huaphan Province is part of its broader strategy to expand operations across Laos.

In 2024, the company signed AUD 15-million contract with Carsberg/Lao Brewery to transport goods within Huaphan Province and to neighbouring provinces in northern Laos, and Vientiane.

Additionally, Linfox secured another AUD 4 million contract to supply forklifts to Carlsberg warehouses in Laos, further solidifying its role in the country’s logistics sector.

Australia’s engagement in Huaphan Province aligns with its broader economic strategy for Southeast Asia, which aims to strengthen regional ties and promote bilateral trade and investment. The country has prioritized fostering economic partnerships with Laos, particularly in sectors such as education, logistics, and infrastructure.
