Vientiane, February 21, 2025 (KPL) – The Lao Women’s Union (LWU) is set to organize a series of activities to commemorate the 115th anniversary of International Women’s Day (March 8, 1910 – March 8, 2025) under the theme: "Rights, Equality, and Strength for All Women and Girls."

In a press statement, Ms. Aly Vongnorbountham, President of the LWU Executive Committee, emphasized the significance of this milestone and outlined the Union’s comprehensive plan to ensure widespread participation across the country. The committee has issued directives to various levels of the organization, including the Central Executive Committee, provincial and Vientiane women’s unions, and ministry-level bodies, detailing the organization of events and activities.

Planned Activities

As part of the celebrations, women’s unions at different levels will hold events highlighting the history of International Women’s Day, reviewing past collaborations with foreign partners, and discussing future strategic directions. These activities will also include:

Lectures and Seminars: Discussions on women’s rights, legal frameworks protecting women and children, gender equality laws, and the Beijing Declaration’s 12 critical areas of concern.

Cultural and Educational Events: Competitions in literature and the arts, sports events, and exhibitions showcasing handicrafts, agricultural products, and other local specialties.

Awareness Campaigns: Informational sessions, quizzes on women’s achievements and history, and other interactive events to engage the public.

The LWU has scheduled two major events in Vientiane to mark the occasion:

Walk for Health: Under the theme "Rights, Equality, and Strength for All Women and Girls," this event will take place on March 1, 2025, at Patuxay, promoting both physical well-being and gender equality.

National Seminar: On March 5, 2025, a seminar titled "For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, and Empowerment" will bring together key stakeholders, including government representatives, civil society, and international partners. The discussions will focus on strengthening policies that support women's development and ensuring greater cooperation at all levels of society.

Ms. Vongnorbountham emphasized that this year’s celebrations aim to raise awareness across all sectors of society, encouraging greater involvement from government entities, men in families and organizations, and international partners. She highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for women to actively participate in national development and fostering an environment where Lao women can thrive in modern society.

By promoting confidence, leadership, and recognition of women’s contributions, the LWU seeks to reinforce its commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls throughout Laos.
