(KPL) Vientiane, Feb 28 – The Government of Japan has awarded a grant of USD 85,400 to support healthcare development in Khammouane Province under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP). The initiative aims to improve access to primary healthcare for local residents.
The funding will be used for the construction of a new hospital building at Nanoy Small Hospital in Nanoy Village, Saybouathong District, enhancing medical services for the community.
Japanese Ambassador to Laos, Tsutomu Koizumi, signed the grant agreement with Dr. Kenchan Thongsavath, Director of the Khammouane Health Department.

Ambassador Koizumi reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting local communities, stating that while this is a small-scale project, it will have a meaningful impact on the well-being of residents in Saybouathong District.
He emphasized that once completed, the new facility will provide a more comfortable and accessible healthcare environment. He also urged local authorities to maintain the hospital properly to ensure its long-term benefits.
“These projects play a vital role in empowering vulnerable and marginalized communities while fostering economic and social development,” he added.

Through GGP, Japan funds small-scale projects that directly benefit local populations by improving economic and social infrastructure in developing countries, including Laos.
To date, Japan has provided over USD 1.3 million in assistance to Khammouane Province, supporting healthcare, education, UXO clearance, infrastructure, and agriculture. In its ongoing effort to reduce regional disparities, Japan remains committed to initiatives that enhance living standards at the grassroots level, ensuring that “no one is left behind.”
