(KPL) The 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games was officially kicked off with a grand opening ceremony in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on the evening of May 5.

The biggest sport event of the Southeast Asian region will run till May 17.

The opening was attended by Prime Minister Hun Sen, his wife, Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith, and athletes and sport officials from ASEAN member countries.

“Long Live the Kingdom of Cambodia! ‘Sport: Live in peace’, a peace for all and all for peace”, said Prime Minister Hun Sen referencing the motto for this year’s editions of the SEA Games and the ASEAN Para Games, reports the Phnom Penh Post.

Cambodia SEA Games Organising Committee (CAMSOC) head Tea Banh, who doubles as the Minister of National Defence, remarked that this year’s SEA Games is more than a mere sporting event, but a chance to further promote cooperation among regional countries in various fields.

The 32nd SEA Games with 38 sports is taking place in Phnom Penh and four other localities - Siem Reap, Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, and Kep.

Laos sends 576 athletes to compete in 32 out of 38 sports. Its goal is to win at least 5 gold medals and more silver and bronze medals than any editions of the SEA Games the country has participated in previous years.

As of May 7, Lao athletes have won 20 medals including three gold, four silver and 13 bronze medals.
