(KPL) A draft law on data protection was proposed at the ongoing National Assembly ordinary session on May12 to ensure the appropriate management of data in the country.

The law was proposed by the Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Mr Thansamay Kommasith.

“This law aims to ensure the protection of personal and organisational electronic data and the maintenance of national stability and peace and order in society, thus contributing to the socio-economic development,” said  Mr Thansamay.

“This law is also needed to facilitate the current trend of socio-economic development, information and communication technology management and to enable the government to manage and protect electronic data and the right of consumers in a just and safe manner,” said  Mr Thansamay.

The new draft law on data protection comprises 11 chapters and 55 articles.

“If the law is approved by the National Assembly, it will become an effective tool for the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications to regulate state and society, ensure data protection in the country, promote investment by domestic and foreign entrepreneurs and protect the rights of consumers,” added  Mr Thansamay.

Following the introduction of the draft law by Mr Thansamay, Vice NA President  Bounpone Bouttanavong urged lawmakers to share their points of view on the law straightforwardly and to the point.
