KPL The Government of Japan has provided equipment to support the improvement of Laos’ international airports under the Economic and Development Programme, marking a key step in strengthening aviation infrastructure and airport services in the country.

A handover ceremony was held on 1 April 2026 at Wattay International Airport by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport through the Department of Civil Aviation, highlighting continued cooperation between Laos and Japan in enhancing airport operations and safety standards.
The equipment was handed over by Japan’s Ambassador to Laos, Mr Koizumi Tsutomu, and received by Minister of Public Works and Transport, Mr Leklai Sivilay, on behalf of the Department of Civil Aviation. Representatives from the Japanese Embassy in Laos, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and relevant sectors also attended the ceremony.

The handover represents a significant milestone in the implementation of Japan’s grant aid project, which began in 2021 with a total value of 1 billion yen (approximately US$8.77 million). The initiative aims to strengthen airport infrastructure and operational capacity across Laos’ international airports.

Under the project, a total of 21 items of equipment and service vehicles have been provided to the Lao Airport Authority and Lao-Japan Airport Terminal Services Company Limited. These include passenger buses, aircraft towing vehicles, passenger boarding bridges, baggage loading vehicles, ambulances, explosive detection systems, and baggage screening machines.
Officials said the newly provided equipment will enhance airport safety, security and operational efficiency, while improving passenger convenience and supporting the continued development of Laos’ civil aviation sector.
