(KPL)The Lao Federation of Trade Unions (LFTU) is preparing a series of nationwide activities to mark the 139th anniversary of International Workers' Day on May 1, 2025. The events are aimed at honoring the history of the labor movement while promoting workers' rights and unity across the country.

At a press conference held on April 24, Mr. Phonsane Vilaimeng, Deputy President of the LFTU Central Committee, announced that trade union branches throughout ministries, organizations, provinces, and cities have been instructed to organize meaningful and inclusive events to celebrate the occasion.

Key activities planned include educational talks on the historical significance of International Workers' Day, knowledge contests for workers, festive media campaigns with educational messages, a “May 1st Walk for Health” at Patuxay Park, a charity golf tournament supporting the upcoming 9th National Congress of Lao Workers' Representatives, public clean-up initiatives, and mobile outreach programs aimed at raising awareness of labor rights.

Local unions are encouraged to adapt the events to fit local contexts, ensuring broad participation and a positive, respectful atmosphere.

International Workers’ Day commemorates the global labor uprising that began in 1886, when workers rallied for fair wages and an eight-hour workday. The broader labor movement has deeper roots, with workers in England organizing for rights as early as 1764 during the Industrial Revolution.

Through these nationwide efforts, the LFTU hopes to honor the enduring legacy of labor activism and foster greater solidarity among Lao workers in the face of today’s changing labor environment.
