(KPL) The Lao Government has officially designated That Phon and Heuan Hinh (Stone House) as national heritage sites. The announcement was made during the opening ceremony of the That Phon Festival on February 8, 2025, at Phon That Village, Xayphouthong District, Savannakhet Province.

The ceremony was attended by Mr. Bounchom Ubonpasert, Governor of Savannakhet Province, along with provincial and district leaders, according to a report from Savannakhet Province.

Mrs. Daovon Xaysoulian, Mayor of Xayphouthong, stated that the designation followed extensive efforts by the Department of Heritage of the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism. A team, in collaboration with provincial and district offices and local authorities, conducted comprehensive surveys of the sites, gathered historical data, and established boundary points for historical registration. Legal documentation was also completed, and local communities were guided in conservation efforts, including site cleaning, removal of obstructions, and preservation measures to prevent damage to the ancient structures. Additionally, designated areas for the sale of offerings such as flowers and baskets were determined to maintain the aesthetic integrity of the temple surroundings.

That Phon, built between 557 and 700, is located near a small lake. The site includes a stupa, a main hall, a shrine hall, monk's quarters, statuary, and a prayer pavilion. A secondary pavilion is used for preparing offering trays for temple prayers. Vat That Phon remains an active religious site, attracting worshippers from various regions.

Local residents and monks from near and far hold strong faith in this sacred Buddha site and are committed to organizing the annual festival to honor traditions and preserve cultural heritage. The 2025 That Phon Festival aims to promote cultural tourism and strengthen national traditions.

The festival features a diverse array of activities, including literary performances by students from various schools, traditional dance by the Savannakhet Arts and Culture Club, and an exhibition of agricultural products and handicrafts from local artisans. A highlight of the event is the wax cattle procession around the Buddha statue, accompanied by vibrant light and sound displays.

The That Phon Festival runs until February 12, 2025.
