(KPL/Kyodo) Six people have been confirmed dead and 10 remain missing after heavy rainfall hit Noto, a region in Ishikawa Prefecture still reeling from a powerful New Year's Day earthquake.

Rescue operations continue as record-breaking rain caused floods and landslides, cutting off roads and isolating more than 100 communities.

Two victims were found near a landslide-damaged tunnel in Wajima, which had already been weakened by the January 1 earthquake and was undergoing repairs, according to the land ministry. Some workers were rescued from the site. Elsewhere in the region, two people remain missing after being swept away by swollen rivers, while eight others are unaccounted for.

In 48 hours, Wajima recorded nearly 500 millimeters of rain, while Suzu received close to 400 mm, with both cities experiencing double the average rainfall for September. As the weather improved, the Japan Meteorological Agency downgraded its “special warnings” for the region to standard “warnings” but urged continued caution due to the risk of landslides.
